Improvements: Added the option to route the audio from the Main outputs using Outbox 8. You can now use [FUNC] + [UP/DOWN] to navigate between channels in the channel configuration menus for Outbox 8. Bug fixes: Fill mode was latched when [PAGE] was pressed and held.

Elektron Digitone manual & official pages

Before you update the Elektron Digitone

Written for firmware 1.43 — the current version is 1.44.

  1. Check your current OS: it is shown in the bottom right corner of the screen while the Digitone powers on.
  2. Back up your projects and Sounds to your computer with Transfer, using the EXPLORE page with MY COMPUTER as the destination.
  3. Install Elektron Transfer on your Mac or Windows computer.
  4. Download the Digitone OS package from the Elektron support page and unzip it to get the .syx file.
  5. Connect the Digitone to the computer via USB and switch it on. In Transfer, set MIDI IN and MIDI OUT to the Digitone on the CONNECTION page.
  6. Drag and drop the .syx file onto the Transfer DROP page, then press [YES] on the Digitone to confirm the OS update.
  7. Do not turn the Digitone off until the update is complete. The unit restarts by itself, and some updates also upgrade the bootstrap right after the first restart.

Requirements & compatibility

Written for firmware 1.43 — the current version is 1.44.

UpdaterElektron Transfer (free) on macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later, or Windows 8 or later
ConnectionUSB for the standard update (SETTINGS > SYSTEM > OS UPGRADE). The Digitone does not appear as a drive on your computer. No driver is needed: the Digitone is USB class compliant.
Minimum OS for USB updateOS 1.30. On an older OS, update via SysEx transfer first. Transfer opens its LEGACY OS UPGRADE page automatically when the current OS does not fully support it.
RecoveryOS UPGRADE from the STARTUP menu (hold [FUNC] at power-on, then [TRIG 4]) through a MIDI interface on the MIDI IN port. USB cannot be used for this method.
OverbridgeOverbridge 2.26.10 supports Digitone and Digitone Keys from OS 1.43, on macOS 11 Big Sur or later, or Windows 10 (latest service pack) and Windows 11.
DowngradeNot supported by Elektron. A downgrade is at your own risk and user content may be lost.
Upgrading from OS 1.32A or olderOS 1.40 added Song mode: the [···] key became the [SONG MODE] key and the PATTERN menu moved to the SETTINGS menu.

How to update the Elektron Digitone

Download the .syx file and load it via Elektron Transfer software with the device connected via USB. On Digitone, go to SYSTEM > OS UPGRADE to start receiving.

Version 1.43 — 9 Sep 2026 New features

Improvements: Added Outbox 8 configuration support. Added the possibility of generating a random name from the naming screen when naming an object. Added slew functionality to the RND waveform for the LFOs. When RND is selected for the WAV parameter, the SPH parameter now sets the amount of slew. It is now possible to adjust the micro timing amount on all trigs on a track at the same time. [UP] and [DOWN] can now be used to navigate the Mod setup source to destination list. Added the possibility to quickly select which sequencer page to edit in GRID RECORDING mode. Press and hold [PAGE], then press one of the lit [TRIG 1–4]keys to select the page you want to edit. Bug fixes: MIDI messages were sometimes not sent if the device tempo was set to very low BPMs. The device could in rare cases become unresponsive when using the arpeggiator.

1.42A [Digitone Keys only] Some devices could sometimes exhibit problems with double-trigging when pressing the keys. Identical to 1.42 for Digitone users.

Improvements: Added an LED backlight setting that enables the possibility to turn the key backlight LEDs on/off. (SETTINGS > SYSTEM) Added key shortcuts for the LED Intensity [SETTINGS] + [TRIG 1-3], and LED backlight [SETTINGS] + [TRIG 9] settings. Improved the [TRACK] keys color scheme for the MUTE modes.

Bug fixes: It wasn’t possible to revert the changes made with the control all function. The device could crash when a song row was added to a song that was cleared while it was playing.

Version 1.40A — 23 Nov 2022

Improvements: Saving a song to a project now works the same as saving a pattern to a project. After using SAVE TO PROJ in the SONG menu, the song is saved without needing to save the project afterward. However, the project needs to be saved before switching to another project to retain the changes. Bug fixes: Latching FILL mode did not work. In SONG mode, queuing a pattern to play after the song is complete while a song row is repeating was ignored and instead the pattern playing on the song row kept playing after the song ended. In SONG mode, if a song row was set to loop indefinitely, queuing another row to play did not have any effect since it was not prioritized over playing the indefinitely looping row. In SONG mode, the swing setting from a queued song could be carried over and affect the currently playing song. There were sometimes intermittent glitches in the audio from the reverb when using USB audio. The MASTER parameter page always reverted to page 1/3 when switching track. Performing direct track transpose multiple times quickly could sometimes result in lag in how it was displayed on the screen. The KB FOLD parameter setting was not pasted/cleared when pasting/clearing track note config. The [NOTE] key was not lit when in keyboard setup.

Version 1.32A — 2 Mar 2022

Bug fixes: The TRK1 LEVEL parameter on the INTERNAL MIXER page was less responsive than for TRK2-4. Fixed a number of issues related to settings made in the GLOBAL FX/MIX menu. The effects were not active after startup/reboot. Changing mute states from Overbridge plugin resulted in unexpected behavior. It was not possible to copy the parameter settings from one LFO page to another. It was not possible to copy or paste the INTERNAL MIXER pages parameter settings from one pattern to another. When the Chorus page was open, it was not possible to close it by pressing SYN2. Minor fixes to errors in the screen UI graphics.

Common problems after updating

Written for firmware 1.43 — the current version is 1.44.

Digitone not detected by Elektron Transfer

Set SETTINGS > SYSTEM > USB CONFIG to USB MIDI. Connect the Digitone directly to the computer, not through a hub, and try another USB port, cable or adapter. Plug in the USB cable before switching the Digitone on, then start Transfer. If it still fails, close other applications, reinstall Transfer and restart the computer.

Digitone does not boot or the OS update fails over USB

Update from the STARTUP menu instead: connect a MIDI interface to the Digitone MIDI IN port, hold [FUNC] while powering on, press [TRIG 4] for OS UPGRADE, then in Transfer choose the startup-menu OS upgrade option from the CONNECTION page, load the OS file and follow the instructions.

Transfer shows a LEGACY OS UPGRADE page instead of updating the Digitone

Your current Digitone OS does not fully support Transfer. Follow the instructions on the LEGACY OS UPGRADE page to complete the upgrade.

Overbridge does not recognize the Digitone on macOS

Install the latest Overbridge and the latest Digitone OS, set SETTINGS > SYSTEM > USB CONFIG to OVERBRIDGE and check the USB cable, ideally on a dedicated USB port. If it still fails, the Overbridge driver is most likely blocked: allow it in macOS Security & Privacy, Privacy & Security, or Login Items & Extensions, depending on your macOS version.
