Before you update the Elektron Digitakt II

Written for firmware 1.16 — the current version is 1.17.

  1. Check which OS you are running now: Elektron shows the OS version in the bottom right corner of the screen while the Digitakt II is powering on.
  2. Back up your projects, presets and samples with Elektron Transfer: connect over USB, open the EXPLORE page and drag them from the device to MY COMPUTER. Elektron does not support downgrading, and a downgrade can lose user content.
  3. Install the latest Elektron Transfer (1.10.4 at the time of writing, macOS 10.13 or later, Windows 8 or later).
  4. On the Digitakt II, go to SETTINGS > SYSTEM > USB CONFIG and select USB MIDI. Transfer needs this mode; if you normally run in Overbridge mode, switch back after the update.
  5. Connect the Digitakt II straight to the computer with a USB cable, not through a USB hub, and plug the cable in before you switch the device on.
  6. Download the Digitakt II OS 1.16 zip from Elektron's support page, unzip it, and in Transfer set MIDI IN and MIDI OUT to the Digitakt II.
  7. Drag the .syx OS file onto the Transfer DROP page, then press [YES] on the Digitakt II to confirm. Do not switch the power off until the update has finished: after some updates the bootstrap is also upgraded right after the first restart.
  8. If you use Overbridge, install Overbridge 2.26.10, the version that lists Digitakt II OS 1.16 as supported.

How to update the Elektron Digitakt II

Update using Elektron Transfer software (v1.8+). Drag the .syx file into the 'Drop' tab of the application with the device connected via USB. OS 1.15 requires Overbridge 2.21 or higher.

Bug fixes: Slices could not be parameter locked when using the Slice TRIG mode in STEP RECORDING mode. Modulating the PLAY MODE parameter didn’t produce the correct results. The Filesystem check dialog results were unresponsive while samples were loading. When upgrading from an OS pre 1.15, DT2 presets that originated from DT1 presets were not migrated. The device could crash when importing DT2 presets that originated from DT1 presets. Sending Note On/Off messages to the FX control channel could, in some circumstances, freeze the device. The device could freeze when saving a preset if the parameter page was changed before saving from the TAGS screen. The device crashed when using [FUNC]+[POS] in the Slice Editor if no slices existed.

Version 1.15 — 25 Jun 2025 New features

Improvements: Added Slice machine. After upgrading to OS 1.15, the device will run a file system integrity check during its first reboot. This check can take up to a minute, and then you will be prompted to close the popup dialog. If the integrity check detects any errors in the file system, you need to use Transfer to back up all your projects and samples on the device. Once the backup is complete, format the +Drive. Go to SETTINGS > SYSTEM > FORMAT +DRIVE. Tick SAMPLES, and then proceed with the formatting. After the formatting is done, use Transfer to import your previously backed-up projects and samples to your device.

Version 1.10B — 9 Jun 2025

Bug fixes: Sending Note On/Off messages to the FX control channel could in some circumstances freeze the device. RTRG parameter locks were not retained when converting a lock trig to a note trig. When increasing pattern length, sometimes UI delays could occur.

Version 1.10A — 15 Apr 2025

Bug fixes: Kits did not save correctly. Using [FUNC] + [YES] to select a sample for an already populated sample slot jumped to the directory of the previously selected sample rather than the directory of the selected sample. The LEN parameter on the SRC page was not updated on the device after it was first edited using the Overbridge plugin. The Machine selection indication on the device was not updated after changing machine using the Overbridge plugin. In some rare cases, the NOTE parameter setting on the TRIG page could be ignored after updating to OS 1.10. The SRR ROUT parameter’s label did not show the correct name. Previewing a trig with retrig added could sometimes make the sound play indefinitely When loading a preset that previously has been transferred to the device using Transfer, sometimes an incorrect sample could be loaded with the preset. Sample Select NRPN did not switch the sample slots correctly. In rare cases, a sample already present on the device, could erroneously be added again to the device when transferring a project using Transfer. Loading preset from Overbridge plugin didn’t override MIDI machine on device Sometimes a preset’s name was lost after it was added to preset pool if the preset name contained lower case characters. Adding parameter locks to all active trigs on a MIDI track did not work. The SLEW parameter was missing in the modulation destination list. SONG mode mutes were not swapped when performing a track swap. The parameters on the SRC page were missing on the device after selecting a MIDI machine using Overbridge. Removing send effects from main outputs, also removed them from their individual outputs. Removing parameter locks on active MIDI trigs while holding [TRK] did not work.

Improvements: Added a new Comb+ filter machine. Added configurable routing of distortion and Base-width filter. Added a new modulator source, KEY TRACKING with four destinations in the SOUND SETUP menu. Added support for sampling mono audio. Added a new VELOCITY TO VOL curve. Added the possibility to load a sample directly to a track from the Sample browser. Improved the MOD destination list UI design. Added the possibility to rename the track sound. Added a method to swap tracks within a pattern. You find this functionality in the SETUP menu ([FUNC] + [FLTR]). Added an option to overdub in Live Recording mode, meaning recording on top of an existing trig does not remove the overlapping notes. Added the possibility to add parameter locks to all active trigs on a sequencer page or track by holding down a trig and then also holding [PAGE] or [TRK] while editing a parameter. Added [TEMPO/METRONOME] + [YES] shortcut to quickly toggle the metronome ON/OFF. Added tap tempo via MIDI note, using G10 on FX CONTROL channel. Added support for importing legacy SysEx data. Added support for exporting a previously imported project or preset with Transfer. Added an option in the PERSONALIZE menu option for allowing live recording parameter changes/locks only to already existing trigs. Added an option in the PERSONALIZE menu that is called TRACK SELECT that lets you decide how to select tracks and how that action relates to triggering the sound of the track. The currently active search filter is now shown at the bottom of the screen when searching presets or kits. Added snap values to the MOD destination list, holding [FUNC] while scrolling to snap to destination categories. The latest selected version of MUTE mode (pattern or global) is now remembered between power cycles. The MIDI machines SEL 1-8 and SEL 9-16 parameters now have unique default SEL CCs. Common problems after updating

Written for firmware 1.16 — the current version is 1.17.

Transfer does not see or connect to the Digitakt II

Set the Digitakt II to USB MIDI in SETTINGS > SYSTEM > USB CONFIG. Unplug other USB peripherals and connect the device directly, not through a hub. Try another USB port, cable or USB-C adapter. Plug the cable in before you switch the Digitakt II on, then start Transfer. If that fails, close other applications, reinstall Transfer and restart the computer.

Transfer opens the LEGACY OS UPGRADE page after I drop the OS file

This happens when the OS currently on the device does not fully support Transfer. Follow the instructions on the LEGACY OS UPGRADE page to finish the upgrade.

The normal update fails or the Digitakt II will not start

Use the STARTUP menu instead. Connect the Digitakt II MIDI IN to your computer's MIDI interface; USB does not work for this method. Hold [FUNC] while powering on, then press [TRIG 4] for OS UPGRADE. In Transfer, go to the SYSEX TRANSFER page, choose OS Upgrade via device startup menu, and follow the on-screen steps.

The file system integrity check reports errors after upgrading from an OS older than 1.15

Use Transfer to back up all your projects and samples. Then format the +Drive: go to SETTINGS > SYSTEM > FORMAT +DRIVE, tick SAMPLES and confirm. When the format is done, import the backed-up projects and samples again with Transfer.

Overbridge does not see the Digitakt II, or shows it as Measuring or Fault

Install the latest Overbridge and the latest Digitakt II OS, and set the device to Overbridge mode in SETTINGS > SYSTEM > USB CONFIG. Check the USB cable. If the device is visible but will not connect, close any other application that uses the local ports Overbridge needs (46000 and 46010-46012 for the first device).
