Before you update the Torso Electronics S-4

Update with careFeature update: a new granular engine for MOSAIC, where FEEDBACK replaces SOS and RAND PITCH replaces DETUNE, plus DISC and TAPE fixes. Caution because Torso lists an open known issue for this release: incoming MIDI clock can be unstable.
  1. Download the latest S4 OS .zip from Torso's S4 support page. Do not unzip it. In Safari, turn off "Open files after downloading" in Settings > General so the file stays zipped.
  2. Connect the S4 to your computer with a USB-C or USB-C to USB-A data cable, not a power-only cable, and without a USB hub.
  3. Tap [CONFIG], go to the SYSTEM menu, select USB MASS STORAGE and tap [YES]. The S4 now appears as a drive on your computer.
  4. While the drive is open, copy your projects, samples and recordings to your computer as a backup.
  5. Drag the update .zip into the root folder of the S4 drive, not inside another folder. Make sure it is not a duplicate with a number in parentheses in its name.
  6. Use your computer's eject function to disconnect the S4.
  7. Tap [CONFIG], go to SYSTEM and select INSTALL UPDATE. The S4 reboots when the installation is complete and deletes the update file on its own.

How to update the Torso Electronics S-4

Download the latest S4 OS update file. Connect the S4 to the computer via a USB-C or USB-C to USB-A cable. Enter USB MASS STORAGE mode on the S4. Drag and drop the update file to the S4's root folder. Use the computer's eject function to disconnect the S4. Tap [CONFIG], go to the SYSTEM menu. Select INSTALL UPDATE to install the update. Do not unzip the update file before transferring it to the S-4.

This release fixes a few issues and bugs present in v2.0. We added the possibility to format the internal disk for optimal playback of audio files in DISC. To optimize and format the internal disk, do a factory reset (CONFIG → SYSTEM → FACTORY RESET). Thanks to @boorch from the community, for the suggestion on optimizing sector/cluster size. Bugfixes - Improved stability, fixing various freezes and crashes. - Fixed a bug where the display did not turn on when plugging in power. - Fixed a bug where the device was unable to save projects. - Fixed an issue where the PROJECT SAVED notification would display before the project was saved. - Fixed an issue where the sample browser is laggy when using an external USB drive. - Factory Resetting the S4 improves DISC performance, limiting pops and clicks. We will address the remaining issues with playback in a coming update. Common problems after updating

The S4 update does not install after I followed the steps

The S4 needs the original .zip file. Do not unzip it: re-zipping an unzipped file does not work. Safari often unpacks zip files after download, so turn off "Open files after downloading" in Safari Settings > General and download again. Make sure the file is not a duplicate named with a number in parentheses, and empty the trash, because a lack of space can cause the error.

The S4 will not go into USB Mass Storage Mode

Use Recovery Mode: unplug the power, connect a USB-C data cable to the computer, hold [CTRL] and plug the power back in. Connect directly without a USB hub, flip the USB-C cable, and use a data cable rather than a power-only cable. If it still fails, power cycle the S4, then do a factory reset. If nothing works, contact Torso support.

The v2 update will not proceed on an S4 that was running v1.x

The v2.x installation cannot continue while user samples, recordings or projects remain on the S4. When the prompt asks you to wipe the S4, it enters USB Mass Storage Mode: connect it to your computer and back up your files. After the installation, copy your samples, recordings and projects back in USB Mass Storage Mode.

The S4 drifts or loses sync to external MIDI clock after updating to 2.2.0

Torso lists this as a known issue in S4 OS v2.2.0: incoming MIDI clock can be unstable. For the best result with external sync, use DISC and press play on the sync master. With Ableton Live, Torso recommends setting Live's MIDI Clock Type to Pattern.

How do I update the Torso S-4 firmware?

Download the S4 OS .zip from Torso's support page and keep it zipped. Put the S4 in USB Mass Storage Mode from [CONFIG] > SYSTEM, drag the .zip into the root of the S4 drive, and eject it. Then go to [CONFIG] > SYSTEM and select INSTALL UPDATE. The S4 reboots when the update is done.

Do I need any software to update the S-4?

No. The S4 shows up as a drive on your computer in USB Mass Storage Mode, so you copy the update file over and install it from the S4's own SYSTEM menu. You can also update from a USB flash drive: plugging in a drive that holds an S4 update .zip updates the S4 automatically.

What does a factory reset erase on the S-4?

A factory reset removes all user samples and projects. You start it from [CONFIG] > SYSTEM > Factory Reset and confirm when prompted. Since OS v2.0.1 a factory reset also formats the internal disk for optimal playback of audio files in DISC. Back up your files in USB Mass Storage Mode first.

Can the S-4 work as a USB audio interface?

Yes. Over USB-C the S4 streams the four tracks and the main out as a 10 in / 10 out USB audio connection to a DAW on Windows, macOS or Linux. On Windows, Torso notes that a driver such as ASIO4All is needed.
