Before you update the Elektron Syntakt
Written for firmware 1.41 — the current version is 1.42.
- Check your current OS version: it is shown in the bottom right corner of the screen while the Syntakt powers on.
- Save your current project on the Syntakt, then back up your projects and sounds to your computer from the EXPLORE page in Transfer.
- Install Elektron Transfer on your computer (macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later, Windows 8 or later).
- Download the Syntakt OS package from the Elektron support page and unzip it to get the .syx OS file.
- Connect the Syntakt to your computer via USB, open Transfer, set MIDI IN and MIDI OUT to the Syntakt on the CONNECTION page and press Connect.
- Drag and drop the .syx file on the Transfer DROP page. When the progress bar on the Syntakt screen finishes, press [YES] on the Syntakt to confirm the OS update.
- Do not turn the power off until the update is complete. The Syntakt restarts by itself, and after some updates the bootstrap is also updated right after the first restart.
- If you use Overbridge, update it to 2.26.10, the version that supports the Syntakt from OS 1.41.

How to update the Elektron Syntakt
Install the latest Elektron Transfer on your computer. Connect Syntakt via USB, open Transfer, select the device in the sidebar, drag the .syx OS file onto the drop zone. The device reboots automatically when the update completes.

Version 1.40A — 27 Apr 2026 Bug fixes
Bug fixes: The FX track’s FPAN parameter was not assigned a MIDI CC value. The Euclidean sequencer’s RO1, RO2, and TRO parameters’ settings were not being converted correctly for projects created in earlier OS versions when upgrading to 1.40. The TRANSPORT SEND setting was not converted correctly for projects created in earlier OS versions when upgrading to 1.40. The FX track’s high-pass filter was behaving as a low-pass filter when the FX track was choked. The FX track’s FPAN parameter was not included in randomization. With FX LFO set to GLOBAL, the SLEW parameter still showed as SPH instead of SLEW. It was difficult to identify track-incompatible Sounds in the Sound Pool when Sound locking. Under some circumstances, the FX track could stop being trigged. The FX track routing was not accessible from the TRACK RELATIONS menu. Copy/paste between the two FX LFO pages did not work when FX LFO was set to active in the GLOBAL FX/MIX menu. In STEP RECORDING mode, performing a Copy action would exit STEP RECORDING mode.

Improvements: Added SP TWINSHOT, a dual sample player machine. Added Track relations functionality, letting you layer tracks together or use choking to have one track cut off other tracks. This is reached through the PATTERN menu. You can now use key tracking to modulate up to four freely assignable parameters. This feature is available in the SOUND > SETUP menu. Added a FILTER PAN parameter to the FX track’s multi-mode filter. Added a configuration menu for the Control all functionality. This is reached through the PATTERN menu. Added new trig conditions: LST, Not LST, Not A:B. Added the possibility to prepare mutes for being muted or unmuted. Added a Personalize menu and moved the LED INTESITY, LED BACKLIGHT, and REMEMBER SUBPAGE there. Added a new setting in the PERSONALIZE menu that lets you choose whether parameter locks are applied to all sequencer steps or only to steps that already contain a trig. There’s also a shortcut to temporarily invert this behavior: press and hold [REC] in LIVE RECORDING mode. Added a new setting in the PERSONALIZE menu that lets you choose whether existing trigs should be automatically copied when you extend the number of sequencer pages. Added a setting in the PERSONALIZE menu that controls how the DATA ENTRY KNOB knob behaves when adjusting the NOTE parameter. You can choose whether turning the encoder steps through notes chromatically, while pressing and turning follows the selected keyboard scale – or the other way around. Added a setting in the PERSONALIZE menu that lets you add notes and parameter locks in LIVE RECORDING mode to already placed trigs instead of replacing them. Added a setting in the PERSONALIZE menu lets choose what happens when you press a key to change tracks. Added support for snap values when parameter locking. Version 1.30B — 30 Jan 2025
Improvements: When performing a Sound lock, the presentation of sounds that are incompatible with the selected track’s machine is improved. They are now shown with a strikethrough instead of with exclamation marks. Bug fixes: Randomizing the SYN page on BD ACOUSTIC, SD ACOUSTIC, and SY CHIP erroneously randomized the TUNE parameter. When viewing or copying a sound to the Sound Pool, the tags were in some cases not displayed correctly. PAGE PLAYBACK did not work correctly when not in GRID RECORDING mode. When in Euclidean sequencer mode, it was not possible to use the PAGE PLAYBACK functionality unless the trigs used to select the pages were active. FX track envelope was not reset when changing to the AHD- envelope type. The retrig setup and song mode header texts were displayed on top of each other. In the Sound Manager, when pressing and holding [FUNC] and previewing a sound incompatible with the selected track, the warning popup did not disappear when previewing another sound. The device could, in rare occurrences, become unresponsive after being updated to OS 1.30. LFOs did not start directly after switching to a MIDI machine. Sometimes, long LFO destination names were not shown in full, but only abbreviated. Under some circumstances, an error message could appear when the device was switched on, even though there was no actual error.
Version 1.30 — 16 Oct 2024
Improvements: Added four new machines: SY CHIP, BD ACOUSTIC, SD ACOUSTIC, and HH LAB. Added an Euclidean mode for the sequencer. It is accessed on the second [TRIG PARAMETERS] page. Added an analog square wave to the BD SHARP machine. Implemented functionality that makes it possible to loop selected pattern pages. You can now save a Sound from a specific trig on the sequencer, complete with its Sound and parameter locks applied. It is now possible to see which PARAMETER PAGES contain parameters with parameter locks. When pressing and holding specific trig in STEP RECORDING mode, the [PARAMETER] keys that contain parameters with locks light up. Added slew functionality to the RND waveform for the LFOs. When RND is selected for the WAV parameter, the SPH parameter now sets the amount of slew. Added the possibility to quickly select which sequencer page that is edited in GRID RECORDING mode. Press and hold [PAGE], and then press one of the [TRIG 1-4] keys that light up to select the active page for editing. Implemented the possibility of generating a random name from the naming screen when naming a Sound or a pattern. In the NAMING menu, press [SETTINGS] to create a random name. Improved the feel of how turning the encoders affects the MIDI parameters. Added support for Overbridge 2.13. Bug fixes: Undoing a page paste operation could cause all parameters to be set to the minimum value. Some NRPN parameters had incorrect values. The value for the LFOs TRIG MODE parameter was not displayed in text. The AMP volume and envelope parameters on the FX track did not influence the sound when monitoring the individual FX track only in Overbridge. The FX track could not be unrouted from the main output.

Improvements: Added an LED backlight setting that enables the possibility to turn the key backlight LEDs on/off. (SETTINGS > SYSTEM) Added key shortcuts for the LED Intensity [SETTINGS] + [TRIG 1-3], and LED backlight [SETTINGS] + [TRIG 9] settings.

Improvements: Added new analog machine SY RAW. Added new digital machine SY SWARM. Added support for Sustain pedal (Sustain and Sostenuto) over MIDI. Saving a song to a project now works the same as saving a pattern to a project. After using SAVE TO PROJ in the SONG menu, the song is saved without needing to save the project afterward. However, the project needs to be saved before switching to another project to retain the changes. Improved the general performance of the device. Bug fixes: Reverting control all operations could, under some circumstances, erroneously revert FX parameters. The Control all function could erroneously affect MIDI tracks and the TRIG page on the FX track. Latching FILL mode did not work. Audio routing settings were, in some cases, not read and set correctly after loading a project. Fixed a number of issues related to settings made in the GLOBAL FX/MIX menu. A note played and held on a track was still audible when changing from an audio-generating machine to the MIDI machine and then back again. Placing a sound lock and selecting a sound using a machine with an incompatible voice type for that track sometimes resulted in a sound that was locked on another trig being played instead. The SYN page parameters were not reloaded correctly if the machine type was not the default and the pattern wasn’t saved anywhere. The trig keys could in some cases send out MIDI note numbers two octaves lower than specified. When playing a song, changing the machine on a track in one pattern could change the machine on several patterns at once. In SONG mode, queuing a pattern to play after the song is complete while a song row is repeating was ignored and instead the pattern playing on the song row kept playing after the song ended. In SONG mode, if a song row was set to loop indefinitely, queuing another row to play did not have any effect since it was not prioritized over playing the indefinitely looping row. [...]

Common problems after updating
Written for firmware 1.41 — the current version is 1.42.
Transfer does not connect to my Syntakt
Set SETTINGS > SYSTEM > USB CONFIG to USB MIDI. Connect the Syntakt directly to the computer instead of through a USB hub, remove other USB peripherals, and try another USB port, cable or adapter. Plug in the USB cable before you turn the Syntakt on, then start Transfer. If it still fails, close other applications, reinstall Transfer and restart the computer.
Syntakt OS update does not work over USB
Use the STARTUP menu instead. Connect the Syntakt's MIDI IN to your computer's MIDI interface, hold [FUNC] while powering on, press [TRIG 4] to enter OS UPGRADE mode, then choose the startup-menu OS upgrade option in Transfer and follow the on-screen instructions. USB MIDI transfer is not possible in this mode.
Syntakt starts updating again after restarting
After some OS upgrades, the Syntakt also updates its bootstrap right after the first restart. This is expected. Do not turn the power off while it runs.
Syntakt not visible in Overbridge or stuck on Measuring or Fault
Install the latest Overbridge and the latest Syntakt OS, set SETTINGS > SYSTEM > USB CONFIG to OVERBRIDGE, and check the USB cable. If the Syntakt is visible but does not connect, close other applications using port 46000 and ports 46010 to 46012 (for the first device).
