Before you update the Dirtywave M8
Written for firmware 6.6.3 C — the current version is 6.6.3 F.
- Check your current firmware: the M8 shows its version at the bottom left of the Song screen for a few seconds after it starts.
- Download the M8 firmware zip from Dirtywave's resources page or the official M8Firmware repository on GitHub, and unzip it.
- Pick the file for your hardware: the Firmware/Model01 or Firmware/Model02 folder. Use the .bin file for the SD card method and the .hex file for TyUploader.
- On firmware 6.6 or newer: copy the .bin file anywhere on the microSD card (with PROJECT > USB_DRIVE or a card reader), exit USB-DRIVE, go to PROJECT > SYSTEM SETTINGS > FIRMWARE UPDATE, select the file and confirm. Do not remove the card while the M8 restarts and updates.
- On firmware older than 6.6, or if the SD card method fails: install TyTools, connect the M8 directly to the computer with a data USB cable (no USB hub), turn the M8 on and close all other applications.
- Open TyUploader (not TyCommander), select "M8 [xxxxxxxx]" in the dropdown, click Upload and choose the .hex file for your model.

How to update the Dirtywave M8
Two methods. SD card (recommended when the M8 already offers PROJECT > SYSTEM SETTINGS > FIRMWARE UPDATE): download M8Firmware.zip, unzip it, copy the .bin file for your model (Firmware/Model01 or Firmware/Model02) anywhere on the microSD card (via USB-DRIVE mode or a card reader), then go to PROJECT > SYSTEM SETTINGS > FIRMWARE UPDATE, select the .bin and confirm. The M8 restarts and updates; do not remove the card. USB (older firmware, or if the SD update fails): install TyTools (on Mac, move it to the Applications folder), connect the M8 directly by USB (avoid hubs), turn it on, close other applications, open TyUploader (not TyCommander), select the M8 in the dropdown, click Upload and pick the .hex for your model. Windows 7 also needs the Teensyduino USB driver.

Common problems after updating
Written for firmware 6.6.3 C — the current version is 6.6.3 F.
M8 is non-responsive or has a blank screen after a firmware update
Hold the power button for 10 seconds to switch it off. Connect it to your computer with a known good data USB cable, without a hub, and open TyUploader. Turn the M8 on by holding power for 2 seconds, then press the internal reset button in the hole on the back once with a SIM tool or paperclip. After about 10 seconds it appears in TyUploader as "HalfKey". Click Upload and select the firmware; the M8 reboots after 10 to 20 seconds.
The M8 firmware update from the SD card fails
Dirtywave's instructions say to use the USB method with TyUploader instead.
The computer does not see the M8 over USB
Use the micro USB cable included with the M8 or another cable that supports data; some cables do not. Avoid USB hubs, as some cause issues when flashing firmware.
